Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd. (SOTL), the demerged telecom division of
Sterlite Industries, commenced its operations last July. The company has three
100 percent subsidiaries viz.; Sterlite Telecom, Sterlite Telecables and
Sterlite Telelink, all engaged in three lines of telecom cable businesses –
optic fibers, optic fiber cables and jelly filled telecom cables. Sterlite
Telecom is the erstwhile cable divison on ARM Ltd. which was taken over by
Sterlite Industries.
The company’s total turnover for the nine months ended 31st March 2001,
standing at Rs. 754.26 crore with a net profit of Rs 258.12 crore. Exports
account for a major chunk of the company’s revenues and its overseas market
include Europe, US, China, Middle and Far East. The company targets end-users in
CATV, and CLEC sectors in these developed markets
While optical fiber and optical fiber cables have become the main profit
drivers for SOTL, it continued to maintain its leadership position in JFCT with
an installed capacity of 100 lckm and a market share of 20 percent.
SOTL is the only integrated manufacturer of OF in India and competes with
international players in the global market.
