SWOT

STRENGTH
  • Good marketshare and a strong presence in the international market

WEAKNESS

  • Dependence on exports can result in dilution of focus on domestic market

OPPORTUNITY

  • High growth in OF business

THREAT

  • The capacity expansion of OF facility is sensitive to process stabilisation and any significant delay will have an adverse impact on financials

Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd. (SOTL), the demerged telecom division of Sterlite Industries, commenced its operations last July. The company has three 100 percent subsidiaries viz.; Sterlite Telecom, Sterlite Telecables and Sterlite Telelink, all engaged in three lines of telecom cable businesses – optic fibers, optic fiber cables and jelly filled telecom cables. Sterlite Telecom is the erstwhile cable divison on ARM Ltd. which was taken over by Sterlite Industries.

The company’s total turnover for the nine months ended 31st March 2001, standing at Rs. 754.26 crore with a net profit of Rs 258.12 crore. Exports account for a major chunk of the company’s revenues and its overseas market include Europe, US, China, Middle and Far East. The company targets end-users in CATV, and CLEC sectors in these developed markets

While optical fiber and optical fiber cables have become the main profit drivers for SOTL, it continued to maintain its leadership position in JFCT with an installed capacity of 100 lckm and a market share of 20 percent.

SOTL is the only integrated manufacturer of OF in India and competes with international players in the global market.
