Bhagyanagar Metals Ltd, the flagship company of Surana Group, is one of the
major players in the Jelly Filled Telephone Cable (JFTC) industry with a JFTC
sales figure of Rs 127.68 crore. However, in 2000-01, the company grew by only
4.9 percent, well below the industry average of 17 percent. This is primarily
due to the fact that the company is not into Optical Fiber Cable (OFC)—the
major growth area.
Bhagyanagar sold 17.38-lckm of cable during the year, primarily to DoT.
Despite an unimpressive growth in 2000-01, the company has been consistent. This
is because of its huge manufacturing base. It has a manufacturing base in
Hyderabad with a licensed and installed capacity of 37-lckm JFTC, and its strong
financial position gives it the necessary levy. This company’s annual turnover
from all manufacturing products, which include copper rods and SEC wires,
besides JFTC was Rs 173.23 crore, with a net profit of Rs 5.55 crore in 2000-01.
DoT, MTNL, and Indian Railways are its prime clients.
Bhagyanagar also developed FRP Strength Member which is used for
manufacturing OFC with in-house R&D. With OFC and JFTC demand, which was
estimated to be growing at 20 percent year on year, the chances for the company
to go up in the next few years look very bright indeed.
