SWOT

STRENGTH
  • Long presence in India with strong product line

WEAKNESS

  • Unified brand recall

OPPORTUNITY

  • New markets, and Internet and backbone related market segments

THREAT

  • From companies which provide end-to-end solutions

When the erstwhile AMP, merged with Tyco in April 1999 worldwide, a change accordingly in India too happened, and the subsidiary here was renamed as Tyco Electronics Corp. India Ltd. Tyco’s turnover in the FY 2000-01 is estimated to be Rs 119.50 crore. Tyco markets a broad range of electronic, electrical and electro-optic connection devices, and an increasing number of interconnection systems and connector-intensive assemblies, and supplies the products later bought into fold from Siemens EC, Raychem and Lucent power systems.

While Tyco’s premises cabling division continued to consolidate its position in the structured cabling market and grew to Rs 48.1 crore, the supply of the Lucent power systems to telecom manufacturers and services, is estimated at Rs 41.4 crore. Today, the company is India’s top brand recall cabling solutions provider and has a marketshare of over 21 percent. This is due to its persistence in strong training, logistics support, bonded warehouse and cordial channels. The company focussed on software development and data centers, and increased its presence in ‘B’ and ‘C’ class cities.

Meanwhile, Lucent power systems, division of Tyco, continued to maintain its hold in the non-DoT sector. It is estimated to have done a business worth Rs 41.4 crore. Raychem and other products fetched it the remaining Rs 30 crore. It will be a real opening up of Tyco in the future, with its interests in undersea cables, etc.
