SWOT

STRENGTH: Widespread client base and varied product line
WEAKNESS: Dwindling margins in manufacturing, low profile image
OPPORTUNITY:  Broadcasting and wireless solutions
THREAT: Decrease in demand for JFTC from major buyers could spell disaster

Fiscal 2000-01 was a time to diversify for Delton Cables. Stepping away from the operation that its name denotes, Delton took on businesses in the wireless domain. This was guided by a desire to improve its bottom line. Also, the company was finding it difficult to sustain comfortable profit margins in its manufacturing operations.

One of the earliest companies in India to manufacture jelly-filled telecom cables, Delton achieved a turnover of Rs 88.45 crore and a growth of 19.1 per cent. On this, the company earned a PAT of Rs 3.11 crore up 8.7 per cent from the previous year PAT of Rs 2.86 crore. Very much like the previous year, the Department of Telecom, ITI, Railways, NTPC and a number of research and development organisations remained the core customers of its cable business.

The company earned around Rs 5 crore from its newly created business dealing in earth stations, VSAT antennas and FM transmitters. For this business, Delton tied up with a number of foreign companies. These include alliances with International Channel Master (VSAT and DTH antenna), Energy Onix for FM transmitters, SWR and PSD for FM antennas, and LGP of Sweden for GSM products like tower mounted amplifiers, boosters and filters. On the digital microwave front it tied up with Codan of Australia. The company also tied up with Coresma of Israel for Internet solutions over existing cable networks.
