SWOT

STRENGTH: Diversified business – the company has been successfully leveraging its paging infrastructure to offer call center services
WEAKNESS: Huge paging infrastructure and dwindling subscriber base
OPPORTUNITY: Domestic call center business
THREAT: Upstart call center companies and lack of properly trained call center manpower

The previous fiscal was a comeback year for DSS Mobile Communications Ltd, which provides radio-paging services in ten cities across the country under the Mobilink brand name. The company booked profits of Rs 12.74 crore on a turnover of Rs 74.21 crore. This turnaround is a significant achievement, given the fact that the company had incurred huge losses during the previous years and also because the paging industry in the country is not in a good shape. It had suffered a loss of Rs 26.58 crore in 1999-2000 and Rs 27.38 crore in 1998-99.

It appears that the company’s foray into the contact center business has paid-off. The company is liberally and extensively using its paging infrastructure to run both domestic and international call centers. The company has also been successfully leveraging its infrastructure to offer a slew of value-added services to its subscribers. DSS has also launched a Mobilink Communication Channel used by many advertisers to promote their products.

All this has emerged as profit centers for the company. This can be concluded from the fact that the company made profits despite a decline in the number of subscribers from 1.79 lakh, a year ago, to 1.72 lakh at the end of this fiscal, even though the company began with acquiring close to 15,000 new subscribers during April, May and June 2000.
