As 2018 comes to an end, Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has shared the association’s key observations about the mobile handset manufacturing industry. According to him, 2018 has been a fruitful year with the mobile handset industry gaining momentous achievement in manufacturing.
He indicates that India has become the world's second-biggest mobile phone market. The resurgent mobile handset manufacturing eco-system in India has saved the country of approximately Rs. 3 Lakh Crore through replacement of CBU imports and the growing domestic assembling/manufacturing of handsets. India’s mobile handset and components manufacturing industry has successfully established 268 manufacturing units generating employment for over 6.7 Lakh across the nation.
Commenting about the industry, Mohindroo said, "ICEA is also proud to inform you that mobile handsets and component manufacturing ecosystem has emerged as the champion category under the Make in India initiative of the Government. Increase in the duty drawback rate to 3.9%, Exemption of import license for mobile phones/tablets, ETA waiver for testing prototypes, etc. are a few initiatives taken by the Government of India for the ease of doing business and exports.”
Mohindroo further added, “Last year despite producing 225 million units of the mobile phone in India, the entire manufacturing sector is under tremendous stress due to the predatory pricing by the e-commerce companies and price disruptions at entry level caused by 4G operators.”
