Google is planning to remove roughly 900,000 apps from play store that have been abandoned or are no longer maintained. Android Authority claims, the amount of available apps on Google Play Store could be reduced by roughly a third.
Both Google and Apple have announced plans to address apps that are neglected, or haven’t been maintained for about 2 years now. This translates to 8, 69,000 apps for Google and 6, 50,000 for Apple.
Google is reportedly planning to hide certain apps, making it hard for people to download these till the creators fix them, according to CNET. The fundamental reason both organizations are taking these steps, is to ensure the safety of its users.
According to the analysis report, Changes in Android and iOS new APIs, and new development methodologies that improve security are not available to older apps. As a result, older apps may include security issues that are not present in newer apps.
