The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), on Thursday, began testing 28 5G cells of a mobile service provider at 13 places in Ahmedabad’s Prahladnagar area. DoT officials measured a data download speed of 1.5 gigabits per second (Gbps).
As per the officials, the 5G technology instruments put at Prahladnagar sites are compact single-boxes with zero footprint that can be installed even on 10m or 15m poles to give localised 5G coverage. Gunjan Dave, the head of the Department of Telecom in Gujarat and Sumit Mishra, the director of the Department of Telecom in Gujarat were among the members of the inspection team.
The testing at Prahladnagar location followed the guidelines set forth by the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), the DoTs technical arm that develops specifications for telecom network equipment and services. According to a news release from the DoT, Its Gujarat team had reported a peak data download speed of 4Gbps for a 5G test site in February at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, installed by another private mobile service provider.
