5Gi to merge with 5G global standards

On Tuesday, the GSM Association (GSMA) called on the governments to license the 6 GHz band for 5G networks. The association said that the move was necessary to realize the full capacity of the network.

GSMA Worried About Future of 5G

GSMA said that, “5G networks need 2 GHz of mid-band spectrum over the next decade to deliver on its full potential".

The telecom body also said that governments need to make 6425-7125 MHz available for licensed 5G at the very least. This move will ensure that backhaul services are protected. GSMA also added that the bottom half of the 6 GHz range at 5925-6425 MHz could be opened on a license-exempt basis with technology-neutral rules.

The association said that the mid-band spectrum is important for TSPs to deliver affordable connectivity. Also, the band in crucial to provide data speeds and capacity necessary for smart cities, transport, and factories.

John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA, said that 5G had the potential to boost the world’s GDP by $2.2 trillion.

He further added, “but there is a clear threat to this growth if sufficient 6 GHz spectrum is not made available for 5G. Clarity and certainty are essential to fostering the massive, long-term investments in this critical infrastructure.”

Varying Approaches to 6 GHz band

Across the world, governments are taking their own stance regarding the band in question. China, for example, will use the entire 1200 MHz in the 6 GHz band for 5G. On the other hand, Europe has split the said band. It will reserve the upper part for 5G,  and make a new 500MHz tranche available for WiFi. This is similar to the approach that Africa and parts of the Middle East are taking. However, US and much of Latin America said that they will offer the band to WiFi and other unlicensed tech, instead of 5G.

GSMA added that the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2023 will provide the opportunity to harmonize the 6 GHz band.
