Internet Grows to 332.4 Mn Domain Name Registrations in the Fourth Quarter of 2017

VeriSign, the domain names, and internet security announced that approximately 1.7 mn domain name registrations were added to the internet in the fourth quarter of 2017, bringing the total number of domain name registrations to approximately 332.4 mn across all top-level domains (TLDs).

 Key highlights:

·         New .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 9.0 mn during the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to 8.8 mn for the fourth quarter in 2016.

·         The increase of approximately 1.7 mn domain name registrations globally equates to a growth rate of 0.5% over the third quarter of 2017. 

·         Domain name registrations have grown by 3.1 mn, or 0.9%, year over year.

·         The .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of approximately 146.4 mn domain name registrations in the domain name base³ at the end of the fourth quarter of 2017. This represents a 2.9% increase year over year.

·         As of Dec. 31, 2017, the .com domain name base totaled 131.9 mn domain name registrations, while the .net domain name base totaled 14.5 mn domain name registrations.
