On Tuesday, Netflix said that it and Universal Pictures will extending a multi-year exclusive rights deal in the US for animated film franchises.
Netflix to Extend Deal with Universal for Animated Movies
The company had said that it will acquire rights to a particular titles 4 months after the release on Peacock. Peacock is Comcast's in-house streaming service. Notably, Universal's DreamWorks Studio has put out some of the popular animated franchises such as "Despicable Me" from Universal's Illumination studios.
Comcast also had said last week that Universal's new movies will go exclusively to Peacock first. The company said that the titles will go to Peacock within 4 months of their launch. As such, Comcast wants that their titles go first on their streaming service, then on Netflix.
In a statement, the company also added that it will also license Universal's complete animated and live-action catalog. The streaming giant will acquire the rights to these titles about 4 years after their release. It also said that it will also acquire rights to other select titles.
At a time when Disney has moved to its own streaming service, Disney+, this deal should help Netflix out massively. The streaming service will continue to have something to offer for its younger audiences.
