Nokia deploys 5G SA private network for Volkswagen

In a press report, Nokia has said that it has deployed a private 5G SA network for Volkswagen. The carmaker has been piloting new smart factory use cases at its main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany; to that extent, Nokia has deployed its Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) solution to provide connectivity.

Nokia said that it has deployed a 5G network that covers the product development center and pilot hall. Incidentally, Volkswagen has started a pilot project to test 5G use in improving vehicle production. More specifically, the carmaker wants to see if the network can help it increase efficiency and flexibility in production.

Currently, Nokia has deployed its DAC solution, which offers high-bandwidth and low-latency connectivity. Volkswagen aims to power sensors, machines, vehicles, and other equipment with connectivity. In the beginning, the network will allow Volkswagen to allow better data capture from its production lines. Nokia has also ensured that the data will remain on the main campus, as it has integrated real-time edge computing. The gear maker said that the network will use the dedicated 3.7-3.8 GHz band for local private wireless networks; interestingly, Volkswagen won the rights to use the spectrum from the German Federal Network Agency.

Dr.-Ing. Klaus-Dieter Tuchs, network planning at Volkswagen, said, “predictable wireless performance and the real-time capabilities of 5G have great potential for smart factories in the not-so-distant future. With this pilot deployment, we are exploring the possibilities 5G has to offer and are building our expertise in operating and using 5G technology in an industrial context".

Also, Chris Johnson, Head of Global Enterprise, Nokia, said, “by deploying private wireless to explore and develop its potential in manufacturing, Volkswagen underscores its leading position in leveraging digitalization to enhance efficiency and productivity. We are delighted to support this effort with the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud and our extensive experience in private wireless networks".
