Reliance Jio Trials 5G VoNR over its 5G Trials Network

On Friday, via a LinkedIn post, Reliance Jio SVP Aayush Bhatnagar said that the telco has trialed Voice and Messaging over 5GNR (5G VoNR) using its indigenous RAN and Core solutions, as well as its own IMC Converged TAS (CTAS) and HSS/UDM combination solution.

The said post read, "after having introducing 4G VoLTE in India back in 2016, this trial marks a significant leap forward for Voice and Messaging over 5G - which is trialed in India for the 1st time by Jio. This trial has been performed using off the shelf smart phones. A crucial aspect of interworking of 5G VoNR with 4G VoLTE and vice versa was also performed in the trial".

Earlier in September, the telco had also trialed an AI chatbot using its 5G SA RAN core network. The telco successfully leveraged technologies such as natural language processing (NLP) and AI; Jio benefitted from 5G’s low latency and high bandwidth. It had also trialed an immersive HD VR meetings solutions, which used both eMBB and low latency of 5G.

Reliance Jio has developed a full telecom-grade 5G stack indigenously. It has said that it will also look to export the same once it can prove the usability of the same across India.

Since the DoT first announced 5G trials in July, Jio, Airtel and Vi, along with 10 other applicants, have been testing 5G networks across the country. Jio's 5G trial network has been live in Navi Mumbai. More impressively, it has achieved end-to-end network slicing on 5G SA Core. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel had trialed cloud gaming over its 5G network recently; it has a live 5G trial network in Manesar, Gurugram. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea's trial network has been up and running as well; it has not achieved any specific use cases.
