Vodafone Idea, Nokia Demonstrate 5G VoNR at Test Site in Gandhinagar

Vodafone Idea, yesterday, announced that it has successfully demonstrated 5G VoNR, or Voice over New Radio, with its technology partner, Nokia. Notably, it has now become the second telco to do so; Reliance Jio demoed its version of 5G VoNR last year.

Vi Demos 5G VoNR at 5G Trials Site

The demonstration took place during the ongoing 5G Trials in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Vi has claimed that once deployed, its 5G VoNR solution will enable the telco to deliver an HD voice experience over 5G. The VoNR will also allow for many other voice applications and use cases.

Incidentally, Vodafone Idea carried out the demonstration on Nokia's AirScale 5G RAN, 5G Core, and IMS voice core. Vodafone Idea has stated that it will help provide "a superior user experience on a reliable, low latency network". Incidentally, 5G VoNR allows a telco to use the 5G network for both voice and data services.

Jagbir Singh, CTO, Vodafone Idea, said, "having achieved the fastest 5G speeds in the country and demonstration of a wide range of use cases, we have now successfully tested VoNR service which offers the best call quality on 5G networks, using technology solutions from Nokia".

Singh added, "I am confident that our relentless pursuit to deliver a superior network for Digital India will help us to continue providing the best in class voice and data services to 5G users in the future".

Vodafone Idea's 5G trials have been quite successful for the telco. Earlier, it recorded 5G speeds in excess of 4 Gbps, touching a maximum of 10 Gbps. Furthermore, Vi has demonstrated use cases such as AI-based VR streaming, 5G VR Connected Schools, 360-degree VR content playback, and so on. Also, the telco again used Nokia's 5G RAN and 5G Core to demonstrate network slicing. Along with this, the telco has also demonstrated 5G over mid-band spectrum, for delivering rural connectivity.
